El final del año pasado y el comienzo de éste estuvieron marcados por una ola de protestas estudiantiles que muchos participantes y observadores caracterizaron como algo sin precedentes en la historia reciente de Hungría. Miles de estudiantes participaron en asambleas estudiantiles, tomaron las calles espontáneamente (1), e intentaron acciones directas como leer sus reivindicaciones en la radio nacional. Todo esto tuvo lugar tras tres años de gobierno de Fidesz, el partido que tiene una “super mayoría” parlamentaria, bajo la guía autoritaria del primer ministro Viktor Orbán. Mientras que la alarmista cobertura internacional acerca de la erosión del imperio de la ley que estaba produciendo sus propias distorsiones (lo que no significa que la mayor parte no fuera correcta al identificar el significativo asalto del régimen de Fidesz sobre los acuerdos políticos liberales), los estudiantes se empezaron a organizar. Lo que sigue son fragmentos de una conversación con Csaba Jelinek, un militante y organizador de Budapest, quien nos lleva a través de la historia del movimiento estudiantil, como participante pero también como alguien que tuvo la oportunidad de observar el desarrollo del movimiento en las redes activistas de Budapest.

The end of last year and the beginning of the current one were marked by a wave of student protests which most participants and observers characterized as unprecedented in the recent history of Hungary. Thousands of students took part in student assemblies, spontaneously took the streets (1), and attempted direct actions such as reading their demands on national radio. All this took place three years into the rule of Fidesz, the party that holds a parliamentary super majority, under the authoritarian guidance of prime minister Viktor Orbán. While alarmist international coverage of the erosion of the rule of law was producing its own distortions (which is not to say that most of it was not correct in identifying the significant assault by the Fidesz regime on liberal political arrangements), students started organizing. What follows are fragments from a conversation with Csaba Jelinek, Budapest based activist and organizer, who takes us through the history of the student movement, as participant but also as someone who had the opportunity to observe the unfolding of the movement through the activist networks of Budapest.
